Base Colors and Dilution

Almost every cat coat starts from one of two pigment families, a black-based series and a red-based series, and a separate dilution gene decides whether that pigment is dense or softened. Dilution is recessive, so a cat needs the gene from both parents to show it. When it does, black becomes blue (grey), chocolate becomes lilac, cinnamon becomes fawn, and red becomes cream. That is why two blue parents can never produce a black kitten, even though a single black cat may quietly carry dilution and pass it on.

Red and Tortoiseshell

The gene for red and cream sits on the X chromosome, which makes it inherit differently in males and females. A male is simply red or not red, while a female can carry both red and another color at once and appear as a tortoiseshell, a patchwork of the two. This is the reason nearly every tortie is female, since it takes two X chromosomes to display both colors. The rare tortie males usually have an extra X chromosome and are typically sterile.

Tabby, Solid, and Patterns

Another gene decides whether a cat's underlying stripes show through as tabby markings or are masked so the coat looks solid, with tabby being the dominant option. Even a cat that appears solid black still carries a hidden tabby pattern underneath. Within tabby there are several looks, including classic swirls, mackerel stripes, spotted, and the subtle ticked pattern. Interestingly, red and cream cats always show some pattern, since their coloring cannot be fully masked.

White, Silver, and Colorpoint

White markings come from a gene that ranges from a small locket to a bold two-tone or nearly all-white coat, while a separate dominant gene can produce a fully white cat that masks every other color. A different mechanism removes pigment from the base of each hair to create silver and shaded effects, and a related one produces warm golden tones. Colorpoint, the Siamese-style pattern, is recessive and only lets color develop on the cooler parts of the body such as the ears, face, paws, and tail, always paired with blue eyes. A cat must inherit the colorpoint gene from both parents to show it.
